Our society is built upon the premise of reciprocity. How many times have we heard what goes around, comes around? One hand washes the other. One good turn deserves another etc. Bring a dead mouse is related to this idea of reciprocity.
When my mother was growing up in North Carolina, they had cats. Each morning, when she came out of the front door to go to school, one of their cats would be there with a dead mouse in its mouth. The cat was showing my mother that he loved her, was thinking of her and was bringing her a present.
Fast forward to my role as a career coach and I realized that what I am teaching clients is how to show they are interested in their interviewer; how they thought of them and came, bearing “gifts”. (not a dead mouse, of course!)
